The digestive system is primarily responsible for the absorption of nutrients. Its main function is to break down food into smaller molecules, allowing nutrients to be absorbed into the bloodstream from the small intestine.

Once food is ingested, enzymes and acids work to digest it, and the walls of the intestines are lined with villi, tiny finger-like projections that increase the surface area for absorption. Here, essential nutrients like carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals pass through the intestinal wall into the bloodstream to be distributed throughout the body to support various functions and maintain health.

In contrast, the respiratory system is focused on gas exchange, primarily involving the inhalation of oxygen and exhalation of carbon dioxide, while the nervous system deals with transmitting signals throughout the body to coordinate functions. The musculoskeletal system, which includes bones and muscles, provides support and movement but does not play a direct role in nutrient absorption.
